How we test
Most "best automation tool" articles are written without opening the tool. Ours aren't. Here is exactly what goes into a guide.
1. We build the workflow
Every comparison or tutorial is based on a workflow we actually build in each tool we cover, using a dedicated test account and realistic sample data (a fake lead, a fake invoice, a fake booking). We record:
- Setup time: minutes from blank canvas to a working run.
- Steps/modules used, and how each tool counts them for billing (Zapier tasks, Make credits, n8n executions).
- What broke: errors, confusing settings, missing integrations.
- Screenshots of the finished workflow and its run history.
2. We price it from official pages, with dates
Prices change constantly. We take pricing only from each vendor's official pricing page and note the date we checked it. Where an official page doesn't state a figure, we say so and link to it rather than guess. We then model the monthly cost at small-business volumes (for example, 100, 500, and 2,000 leads a month).
3. We publish the spec
Each guide comes with a downloadable spec sheet, checklist, or calculator, with the trigger, the steps, and how each step bills, so you can rebuild the workflow in your own account.
4. We re-check
Each article shows an "Updated" date. We re-check pricing at least quarterly and whenever a vendor announces a change.
What we don't do
- We don't accept payment for rankings or positive coverage.
- We don't publish test results we didn't measure. Anything we estimated is labeled as an estimate.
- We don't recommend a paid tool when a free one does the job.
